Connecting Pricemaster to Magento
How the Magento integration works, what syncs in and out, and how to connect your store — with separate step-by-step instructions for Magento 2 (integration access token) and Magento 1 (SOAP API user and key), because the two versions connect in completely different ways.
Connect Magento once and Pricemaster keeps your storefront priced
Pricemaster connects directly to your Magento store through Magento's own API. That single connection lets Pricemaster read your product catalogue, watch the market around each product, calculate new prices inside your margin rules, and write the new price back to the matching product in Magento. Because it writes straight to Magento, the change is live on your storefront right away — there's nothing to publish, export or sync by hand.
It's a closed loop: read your catalogue → track competitors → recalculate within your guardrails → push the new price back to the product. From then on it runs on a schedule, and you can send prices on demand whenever you want.
What Pricemaster reads, and what it writes back
Imported from Magento
Pricemaster pulls your catalogue page by page and captures, for each product:
- Product name & SKU
- Barcode / EAN and MPN — used for accurate competitor matching
- Current price, plus any active special (sale) price
- Cost — powers margin maths
- Stock quantity & status
- Product images
- Description and product attributes
- Recent sales orders (read-only) — power the sales-velocity analytics and best-seller insight behind your pricing
Written back to Magento
The only thing Pricemaster changes is the price:
- The calculated new price, written to the matching product on a schedule (or on demand).
- Promotion-aware: products on a special price have their special price updated; everything else has its standard price updated.
- Large catalogues are sent in batches so many prices update reliably.
- Every change is logged with the rule that caused it, the old and new price, and the resulting margin.
Pricemaster never changes your orders, customers, categories or your theme — orders are read for sales analytics, nothing more.
Magento 1 or Magento 2?
You need to know this before you start, because the credential you create is completely different for each. If you're not sure, you don't have to guess.
Let Pricemaster check for you
On the Magento connection screen, type your shop address into Shop address and click Check my store. Pricemaster looks at your storefront — without any credentials, and without changing anything — and tells you which version it found, then shows you the right fields to fill in.
Or look in your Magento admin
Log in to your store's admin. On Magento 2 the version number is shown in the footer of every admin page (for example Magento ver. 2.4.7), and the menu runs down the left-hand side. On Magento 1 the menu runs across the top, and the footer shows something like Magento ver. 1.9.4.5. OpenMage stores are Magento 1 for our purposes and connect the same way.
Or ask whoever maintains the site
Your developer or agency will know immediately. It's worth asking anyway if you're on Magento 1 — see the note below.
Connecting a Magento 2 store
Magento 2 uses an integration access token. You create it once in your Magento admin, and you can revoke it at any time without contacting us.
Creating the access token in Magento
Open Integrations
In Magento admin go to System → Extensions → Integrations, then click Add New Integration.
Name it
Call it Pricemaster. Leave the callback and identity link URLs blank. Magento will ask for your admin password at the bottom of this page.
Grant the API resources
Open the API tab. Set Resource Access to Custom and tick:
- Catalog — so we can read products, prices and attributes (and write prices back).
- Sales — so your order history can power the sales-velocity analytics. Read-only; we never change an order.
- Stock (under Catalog) — so stock status is accurate.
Nothing else is needed. In particular Pricemaster never needs customer data.
Save, then Activate
Click Save. Back on the Integrations list, click Activate on the row you just created and confirm the permissions. Magento then shows four values — the one you need is the Access Token. Copy it.
Entering it in Pricemaster
Enter your shop address
Type your shop address (for example https://www.your-store.com) and click Check my store. Pricemaster confirms it's Magento 2 and works out the API address for you — it lives at your-store.com/rest/V1.
Paste the access token
Paste the token into Integration access token and submit. Pricemaster tests the connection before saving anything, so a mistyped token or a missing permission is caught straight away rather than failing quietly later.
Connecting a Magento 1 store
Magento 1 has no integrations screen and no access tokens. Instead you create a Web Services user with a role, and Pricemaster signs in with that user's name and API key. This also applies to OpenMage stores.
Creating the API role
Open Web Services roles
In Magento admin go to System → Web Services → SOAP/XML-RPC Roles and click Add New Role.
Name the role and set its access
Under Role Info, name it Pricemaster. Then open Role Resources, set Resource Access to Custom and tick Catalog (this covers products, categories and product images). Save the role.
Creating the API user
Open Web Services users
Go to System → Web Services → SOAP/XML-RPC Users and click Add New User.
Fill in the details
Set the User Name to pricemaster — this is the name you'll give us, not an email address. Add a first name, last name and email, then set the API Key and confirm it. The API key is a password you choose; Magento will not show it again, so save it somewhere safe as you go.
Assign the role
Open the User Role tab and select the Pricemaster role you just created. Save the user. This step is easy to miss — a user with no role can sign in but will see an empty catalogue.
Entering it in Pricemaster
Enter your shop address
Type your shop address and click Check my store. Pricemaster confirms it's Magento 1 and switches the form to ask for the right credentials. Its API lives at your-store.com/api/v2_soap.
Enter the user and key
Put the User Name from step 2 into SOAP API user, and the API Key into API key, then submit. Pricemaster signs in and reads a product back before saving anything, so you'll know immediately if the role or key isn't right.
/api/v2_soap is reachable from outside.
What happens next
Pricemaster imports your catalogue and walks you through the rest of onboarding:
Products import
Your Magento products are pulled in with their SKUs, barcodes, cost, stock, images and any special prices. You can watch progress from the products area.
Match and select competitors
Each product is matched to competitor listings, primarily by EAN. You then enable the competitors that matter for your market.
Set your rules and go live
Build your pricing rules — follow-the-market, undercut, flat markup, flash — always inside your minimum-margin and cash-floor guardrails. New accounts start with price pushing switched off, so you can build and preview rules freely with nothing written to your store. When you're happy, the Pricemaster team switches pushing on with you and your rules go live.
When cost prices change in Magento, repricing recalculates on the new cost basis so your margins hold. Once pushing is enabled, automated pricing runs when you set rules live, and you can send a single price by hand from any product page whenever you want.
You stay in control of the connection
- On Magento 2, access is via an integration access token you create and can revoke at any time from System → Extensions → Integrations — no need to contact us first.
- On Magento 1, access is via a Web Services user you create and can delete or re-key at any time from System → Web Services → SOAP/XML-RPC Users.
- Grant only the resources needed — Catalog for products and prices, Sales (read-only) for the sales analytics on Magento 2. It never needs customer data.
- Nothing is written to your store until price pushing is switched on for your account. New accounts start with pushing off while you import, match competitors and build rules — the app shows a clear banner the whole time it's off, and the Pricemaster team enables it with you when you're ready to go live.
- Automated pricing only runs once pushing is enabled and you set your rules live; nothing is written to your store before then.
- A suspended account never pushes prices, regardless of any rule.
- Your Magento store stays the single source of truth; Pricemaster reads from it and writes prices back.
Common questions
- How do I know whether I'm on Magento 1 or 2? Click Check my store on the connection screen and Pricemaster will tell you, or look at your admin footer — see Magento 1 or Magento 2? above.
- I have Magento 1 and the access token field won't accept anything. That's expected — Magento 1 has no access tokens. Choose Magento 1 on the connection screen and you'll be asked for a SOAP API user and key instead. See Connecting Magento 1.
- Can Pricemaster update prices on my Magento 1 store? Not automatically. The Magento 1 connection is read-only: it imports your catalogue and keeps your product data enriched. Automated repricing needs Magento 2 — get in touch and we'll talk through the options.
- Will it change anything other than prices? No. It reads your catalogue and sales history, and the only thing it ever writes is the price on your products. Orders, customers, categories and your theme are never changed.
- When does it start changing prices on my store? Only once price pushing is enabled on your account. New accounts start with pushing switched off while you import, match competitors and build rules — the app shows a banner the whole time it's off — and the Pricemaster team switches it on with you when you're ready to go live.
- What about my sale prices? They're respected. If a product is on a special (sale) price, Pricemaster updates the special price; if it isn't, it updates the standard price. Your promotion structure isn't disturbed.
- How fast does a price change show on my store? Straight away. Pricemaster writes to the product in Magento, so the new price is live on your storefront as soon as it's sent.
- Won't automated pricing undercut my margins? No. Every automated price passes through your minimum-margin percentage and minimum cash-margin floors before it is sent. If a rule would breach a floor, the floor wins.
- I sell on other channels too, not just Magento. If you run Amazon, eBay or marketplaces through Linnworks, connect the Linnworks integration instead — one connection reprices every channel. For a Magento-only store, connect Magento directly.
- Do I need a developer or any CSVs? No. Create the credential in your Magento admin, paste it into Pricemaster, and the catalogue imports itself.
